Red Bull Air Race Event, September 19-22
The following information is provided to make residents aware of the anticipated
impacts of the planned Red Bull Air Race event from September 19 22.
What is the Red Bull Air Race event and when is it?
The Red Bull Air Race event will take place over a period of four days in San Diego
Bay, south of the USS Midway, north of the Coronado Bridge, centered mostly in front
of the Embarcadero, September 19 22. The event will be a flying competition where
pilots fly a defined, timed course. The course is created with inflated pylons atop
floating 110 x 30 barges.
What are the impacts in the bay as a result of the event?
During the event and while training sessions are occurring prior to the event, large
blocks of time are scheduled when there will be no boat traffic allowed to cross the
event area. During these time periods, the pilots will be flying consistently and the
potential for noise impact to the residents in the vicinity is likely. While the activities are
not scheduled to go later than 6:30 p.m. on any day, they will begin as early as 7:30
a.m.
Additionally, the City has been notified that commuter ferry service on Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday, September 19 21 will be canceled. Regular ferry service will
only be available during specific blocks of time.
Where can I watch the event?
Spectator viewing (for an admission fee) is planned to occur on the San Diego side of
the bay. No plans have been made for accommodating spectators on the Coronado
side of the bay; therefore, the Coronado Police and Fire Departments have developed
an incident action plan, which covers issues of staffing, traffic control, and emergency
response. A command center will be set up in the Bay Club parking lot. Staffing is
being planned similar to that which is used for Fourth of July activities. The Citys Public
Services Department has also developed a plan concerning trash and recycling
collection and post-event clean up.
Who do I contact if I have questions or concerns about the event?
The City of Coronado has no permitting authority associated with this event. For
additional information, please visit the San Diego Unified Port District website at
